About Kara
Kara Grant is a PEI Olympian who competes internationally for Canada in the sport of modern pentathlon. At 30 years of age, in the prime of her athletic career and with many exciting possibilities ahead, she is exactly where she wants to be in life.
Born and raised in the community of Stratford, Kara was heavily involved in the Island equestrian scene for many years and it was through riding and early training with the Charlottetown Pony Club that she became involved in pentathlon. Kara graduated from UPEI with a Bachelor of Science in May 2002. Kara trained as a full time athlete leading up to the 2004 Olympic Games where she placed 22nd.
Kara worked full time for the Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic in 2005. She resumed full time athlete status in 2006 with new perspectives on life and sport. In 2008, Kara had some of her best results ever including a World Cup Bronze medal, the first ever won by a Canadian pentathlete. Kara competed at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing where she finished 31st. Representing PEI and Canada has always been a great source of pride for Kara and competing in the Olympic Games were some of her greatest life experiences.
Following the 2008 Olympic Games Kara moved back to Prince Edward Island where she continues to train and has also added some part time work to her schedule. The 2009 pentathlon season has been one filled with challenges and new experiences as the sport of Modern Pentathlon has had some format changes such that it now includes a combined running and shooting event (click here for more info). Adapting to this new format had been interesting and training while working part time jobs has kept Kara on her toes!
Kara continues to speak to school aged groups and present as Keynotes speaker at events and business conferences. She is also preparing for the two final exciting events of the 2009 season: The 2009 Modern Pentathlon World Championships in London, England and the 2009 Canadian Modern Pentathlon World Championships in Port Coquitlam, BC.
